Distribution of Serotonin-immunoreactive Enterochromaffin Cells in the Gastrointestinal Tract of the Least Shrew (Cryptotis parva) International Journal of Morphology
Al-Tikriti,Mohammed S; Khamas,Wael; Chebolu,Seetha; Darmani,Nissar A.
Serotonin is an important neurotransmitter in the central (CNS) and peripheral (PNS) nervous systems. It is involved in a variety of physiological processes both in the gut and in the CNS. The present study examined the distribution of serotonin containing enterochromaffin cells in the gastrointestinal tract (GIT) of a vomit competent species, the least shrew. These cells were easily recognized by their globular granules stained with the H&E and serotonin immune-positive stain. The immunoreactive enterochromaffin cells (IERCs) were mainly confined to the basal portion of the glandular epithelium and were distributed throughout the shrew stomach, small and large intestine. None was found to be associated with the mucosal epithelial lining. Moreover,...

SOUZA,NOEMI D. DE; BELIN,BRUNA S.; MASSOCATTO,CRISTINA L.; ARAÚJO,SILVANA M. DE; SANT’ANA,DÉBORA M.G.; ARAÚJO,EDUARDO J.A.; P. FILHO,PHILENO; NIHEI,OSCAR K.; MOREIRA,NEIDE M..
Abstract: We investigated the effects of acetylsalicylic acid (ASA) on the total myenteric neuronal population in the descending colon in Trypanosoma cruzi-infected mice. Thirty-five male Swiss mice, 60 days old, were divided into a control group (C group), control group treated with ASA (CA group), infected group (I group), and infected group treated with ASA (IA group). A total of 1300 trypomastigotes of the Y strain of T. cruzi were intraperitoneally inoculated in the IA and I groups. The CA and IA groups were treated with ASA intraperitoneally. At 75 days post-infection (dpi), all of the animals were sacrificed. Neurons in the colon were stained with Giemsa, quantified, and measured. No difference in the course of infection was observed between the IA...

Effect of the ascorbic acid treatment on the NADHd-positive myenteric neurons of diabetic rats proximal colon BABT
Zanoni,Jacqueline Nelisis; Pereira,Renata Virginia Fernandes; Freitas,Priscila de.
The aim of this work was to study the effect of the ascorbic acid on the myenteric neurons of diabetic rats proximal colon. Fifteen rats (90 days old) were divided into three groups: control, untreated diabetic and treated diabetic with ascorbic acid (DA). After 120 days of daily treatment with ascorbic acid, the intestinal segments were submitted to the NADH-diaphorase (NADHd) histochemistry technique to expose the myenteric neurons. The group DA showed a higher neuronal density (33.4 %) when compared to the untreated diabetic animals (p < 0.05). Cellular body area of neurons was significantly larger in group DA (17.3 %) when compared to the untreated diabetics (p < 0.05). It could be concluded that the ascorbic acid promoted a neuroprotective...

Efficacy of geraniol but not of β-ionone or their combination for the chemoprevention of rat colon carcinogenesis BJMBR
Vieira,A.; Heidor,R.; Cardozo,M.T.; Scolastici,C.; Purgatto,E.; Shiga,T.M.; Barbisan,L.F.; Ong,T.P.; Moreno,F.S..
β-ionone (βI), a cyclic isoprenoid, and geraniol (GO), an acyclic monoterpene, represent a promising class of dietary chemopreventive agents against cancer, whose combination could result in synergistic anticarcinogenic effects. The chemopreventive activities of βI and GO were evaluated individually or in combination during colon carcinogenesis induced by dimethylhydrazine in 48 3-week-old male Wistar rats (12 per group) weighing 40-50 g. Animals were treated for 9 consecutive weeks with βI (16 mg/100 g body weight), GO (25 mg/100 g body weight), βI combined with GO or corn oil (control). Number of total aberrant crypt foci (ACF) and of ACF ≥4 crypts in the distal colon was significantly lower in the GO group (66 ± 13 and 9 ± 2, respectively) compared to...

Enhanced mucosal re-epithelialization induced by short chain fatty acids in experimental colitis BJMBR
Aguilar-Nascimento,J.E.; França-da-Silva,L.R.; de-Oliveira,A.F.; Gomes-da-Silva,M.H..
The short chain fatty acids (SCFA) are the best nutrients for the colonocytes. Glucose is poorly used as a fuel but may be transformed into SCFA by colonic bacteria. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of SCFA or glucose on experimental colitis. Colitis was induced in 30 Wistar rats by colonic instillation of 4% acetic acid. Five days later they were randomized to receive twice a day colonic lavage containing saline (controls, N = 10), 10% hypertonic glucose (N = 10) or SCFA (N = 10) until day 8 when they were killed. At autopsy, the colon was removed and weighed and the mucosa was evaluated macro- and microscopically and stripped out for DNA assay. Data are reported as mean ± SD or median [range] as appropriate. All animals lost weight but...

Moreira,Neide M; Sant'ana,Débora M. G; Araújo,Eduardo J. A; Toledo,Max J. O; Gomes,Mônica L; Araújo,Silvana M. de.
Define an experimental model by evaluating quantitative and morphometric changes in myenteric neurons of the colon of mice infected with Trypanosoma cruzi. Twenty-eight Swiss male mice were distributed into groups: control (CG, n=9) and inoculated with 100 (IG100, n=9) and 1000 (IG1000, n=10) blood trypomastigotes, Y strain-T. cruzi II. Parasitemia was evaluated from 3-25 days post inoculation (dpi) with parasites peak of 7.7 × 10(6) and 8.4 × 10(6) trypomastigotes/mL at 8th dpi (p>0.05) in IG100 and IG1000, respectively. Chronic phase of the infection was obtained with two doses of 100mg/Kg/weight and one dose of 250mg/Kg/weight of Benznidazole on 11, 16 and 18 dpi. Three animals from each group were euthanized at 18, 30 and 75 dpi. The colon was...

Probiotics enhance the recovery of gut atrophy in experimental malnutrition Biocell
Dock,Diana B.; Aguilar-Nascimento,José E.; Latorraca,Marcia Q..
AIM: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of probiotics on the recovery of the bowel atrophy induced by malnutrition in rats. METHODS: Twenty-and-six Wistar rats (200-250g) were fed with either a normoproteic (sham group, n=6) or a free-protein diet (n=20) during 12 days. Twelve malnourished rats were randomized to recover during 15 days with either a hydrolyzed diet (control group, n=6) or the same diet enriched with probiotics (Streptococcus thermophilus and Lactobacillus helveticus; probiotic group, n=6). RESULTS: Probiotic group showed similar gain of body, liver and bowel weight than controls. At the jejunum, both the villus height (383±49 vs. 321±46mm; p=0.04) and crypt depth (157±31 vs. 125±10mm; p=0.04) were greater in probiotic group...

The Effect of Low Protein on Colonic Mucosal Barrier in Pigs International Journal of Morphology
Hou,Qihang; Xia,Mi; Hu,Wiwei; Yu,Qinghua; Zhang,Bingkun.
Reducing nitrogen nutrients concentration in dairy food is economic for pig industry. Here, we used finishing pig as model to investigate the effect on colon mucosal barrier and nutrients absorption after reducing crude protein (CP) in dietary from 16 % to 13 %. The results showed that crypt depth, cells, claudin-1 and E-cadherin expression level will not be changed, which implied the integrity of colon mucosal structure. Furthermore, the expressions of ASCT1, EAAT3 and SGLT1 in colon were also maintained at normal levels in 13 % CP dietary. Interestingly, the CAT1 and GLUT2 expression were increased significantly after reducing CP level to 13 %, which might be attributed to the compensatory nutrients absorption. This study implied that 13 % CP was...

Wheat bran- but not oat bran-enriched diets increase the mucosal height of the cecum and colon of newly weaned and aged rats BJMBR
Cavaglieri-Felippe,C.R.; Polacow,M.L.O.; Campos,M.R.; Vecchia,M.G.; Curi,R..
The effect of diets enriched with oat or wheat bran (prepared by the addition of 300 g of each fiber to 1000 g of the regular diet), given for 8 weeks, on the mucosal height of the colon and cecum was investigated. Newly weaned (21 days old) and aged (12 months old) male Wistar rats were used in this study. As compared to controls, diets enriched with wheat bran provoked a significant increase in the mucosal height, whereas oat bran did not cause any effect. In newly weaned rats (21 days old), wheat bran increased the mucosal height (µm) in the cecum by 20% (mean ± SEM for 8 rats; 169.1 ± 5.2 and 202.9 ± 8.0 for control and wheat bran, respectively) and in the colon (218.8 ± 7.2 and 264.5 ± 18.8 for control and wheat bran, respectively). A similar effect...
